What Is Spinal Decompression Therapy and How Does It Work?

If you have been to a chiropractor, you may have noticed that they offer Spinal Decompression Therapy, and you may be wondering what this is and how it helps.

Spinal decompression is a nonsurgical option for treatment that is specifically designed for those who are suffering from mild to moderate back pain.

Spinal Decompression Therapy is used to realign the spine and help to relieve pressure on pinched nerves that are causing chronic pain. The traction from spinal decompression therapy will increase the circulation to the damaged disc which allows it to begin the natural healing process. This may also reduce compression of nearby spinal nerve roots.

This type of therapy is often prescribed by a Chiropractor when a patient is suffering from chronic back pain from damaged discs.

How to Perform Spinal Decompression Therapy

Patients receiving spinal decompression therapy will remain fully clothed and lie on their backs on a motorized table with the lower half being able to move.

A harness will be placed around the patients hips and will be attached to the lower table near the patients feet. The upper part of the table will remain in a fixed position while the lower part where the patient is harnessed will be able to slide back and forth. This provides the traction and relaxation of the table.

The patient should not be feeling pain during or after the decompression, they should feel some stretching of the spine during the therapy.

Who can Receive Spinal Decompression Therapy?

The best way to know for sure if you are a contestant for spinal decompression therapy is to consult with your Chiropractor and see if they prescribe the treatment for you. They will be able to help you find the best treatment options base upon your pain or injury condition.

However, below is a list of some pain symptoms or conditions that are often considered for spinal decompression therapy:

Herniated Disc and Sciatic Nerve Pain Patients: Using spinal decompression therapy on a herniated disc patient can relieve pressure on the disc and promote healing. Many sciatic and herniated disc patients report feeling pain relief after multiple sessions on the decompression table.

Degenerative Disc Patients: Degenerative Disc Disease occurs when the padding between the vertebrae slowly breaks down making the spine less and less stable which puts pressure on the surrounding nerves. Using spinal decompression therapy can help to reverse the side effects of degenerative disc disease by alleviating pressure on the spine and allowing the vertebrae padding to heal.

Facet Syndrome Patients: Facet syndrome caused pain in the joints of two vertebrae and is typically caused by general wear and tear on the body from aging. Spinal decompression therapy can help to correct the deterioration of the spine and help to cure the painful side effects of facet syndrome.

Failed Spinal Surgery Patients: For patients who received spinal surgery but have not experienced a pain reduction or are still suffering from chronic pain, spinal decompression treatment may be your best option. These treatments can help to relieve chronic pain from a failed spinal surgery.

Patients who don't Improve after Non-Operative Treatments: Patients who have tried other treatment options such as medical massage or physical therapy, and are still suffering from chronic pain, may find the relief they are looking for with spinal decompression therapy.
