Five Things You Should Know About Chiropractic Care

Posted by Florida Spine and Injury | Jan 15, 2020 3:00:00 PM

Twenty years ago, chiropractic care was relatively unknown. There weren't a lot of people who truly understood the practice.

Over the years, more and more people have learned about the practice, and the average person seems to have a decent grasp on what chiropractic us.

Still, chiropractic care is one of the most misunderstood medical practices. There are a bunch of myths that surround chiropractic care that has lingered and for years and years.

Check out 4 surprising conditions that chiropractors treat

To do our part to make sure people really understand how chiropractic differentiates itself from other types of healthcare, we put together five facts that might not be understood by the general population.

Adjustments Don't Hurt

Contrary to popular belief, there's no bone snapping or head popping during spinal adjustments.

Spinal adjustments are known to cause anxiety among new patients, but the adjustments are actually more gentle than you'd imagine.

They involve quick, direct pressure on a specific area of the spine.

The popping sound it makes is called a cavitation, and it is due to space being created within the joint, causing gasses to be released from the joint.

Adjustments won't wear out your joints, even though that assumption is commonly made because many people have been warned not to crack their knuckles.

Adjustments, unlike cracking your knuckles, are explicitly applied to improve the motion of your joints and limit the small dysfunctions that can lead to arthritis over time.

Most people feel lighter after adjustments, being able to move their bodies easier and stand up taller.

You Don't Have To Go Forever

Once you start visiting your chiropractor, you aren't bound to them for the rest of your life.

Most people that start seeing a chiropractor soon realize the power of chiropractic care and won't tolerate living in pain.

Once you experience how you feel from seeing the chiropractor, you learn how chiropractic care can improve function and help you heal from minor injuries, you will find yourself wanting to continue visiting them.

Chiropractic care is like exercise. Once you've done it long enough, and you realize all of the fantastic benefits, you just don't want to stop.

Your chiropractor would love to treat you for the rest of your life, but only for the right reasons. They don't want to treat you if you feel "trapped."

They only want to treat you for extended periods if you understand that everything in your body has working, moving parts that need to be maintained.

Chiropractic Care Can Keep You Healthy

There have been studies done that have shown that spinal adjustments consistently reduce the production of pro-inflammatory chemicals associated with tissue damage and pain.

They may also enhance the function of the immune system defense.

This was first noticed during the flu pandemic of 1917-1918. Chiropractors saw that their patients seemed to have fewer fatalities than the general population.

The estimated death rates among patients of conventional medical care in the U.S. was estimated at five to six percent, while the fatality rate of chiropractic patients was only .25%.

Doctor's Don't Do The Healing

A doctor's job isn't actually to "heal" you.

Your body is in charge of healing itself, and the best doctors do a great job to help facilitate that process.

Chiropractors work to restore proper motion in the joints, which relieves tension on the nerves and muscles and allows your body to do the healing that it is inherently made to do.

The belief among chiropractors is that the body is a perfect organism in its natural state, and diseases come from a disruption of that natural state.

That disruption is in the body's proper transmission of signals by the nerves, which affects its ability to heal and defend against disease-causing agents.

Chiropractors don't treat disease.

They treat the spine by assessing which spinal levels are experiencing dysfunction and then perform an adjustment to restore proper nerve flow so the nervous system works efficiently.

Pain Is The Last Symptom

Your spine is often restricted or unstable for months or even years before it presents itself as a "back problem."

It's also important to note that the absence of pain does not equal health.

While sometimes painkillers might be necessary, the painkiller is masking the pain, but the dysfunction still exists.

Muscle, ligament, and joint injuries often occur as a result of long-term biomechanical dysfunction, sometimes from past injuries, making the area susceptible to future injury.

Patients are often surprised to find out that their issues have been lurking inside of them for up to 10 years or longer.

They also have a hard time believing that people visit the chiropractor when they aren't in pain.

Those patients want to get to the root of the problem to make sure it doesn't come back, and that the pain never resurfaces.
